It seems like everyday social media, magazines, and Dr. Oz are revealing to us the new secretes to eternal health. In 2016, Natural Grocers talked to a panel of companies and nutrition experts to have them predict what trends to expect in nutrition for 2017, and here were there predictions for the top 10 nutrition trends for 2017:

1. Eating Healthy= Eating Ethically.

Whether it is ethical eggs or humane hamburgers, consumer interest in how their food was produced is at an all-time high.

2. Organic Everything

More people are realizing how the impact of pesticides and nutrition on their health and are demanding that their food is healthier and more nutritious.Just remember: an organic label does not mean healthy, nor does it mean that the brand is committed to protecting the environment or promoting health.

3. Mocktails > Cocktails

These non-alcoholic beverages are thoughtfully constructed, eye-catching, and delicious.

4. The Spice Turmeric Is HOT.

Turmeric is one of the most heavily researched spices and it has made its way into juices, tonics, food colorings, and herbal supplements. Research has shown that this South Asian spice may be a free radical scavenger and support a healthy inflammatory response and cognitive function.

5. Goodbye Noodles, Hello Zoodles.

Vegetable noodles, such as zucchini noodles (zoodles), or sweet potato noodles, can be made with a spiralizer and used to replace traditional grain noodles in all your favorite dishes.

6. Waste Less Food.

Nearly half of the food in America is wasted. Save your chicken carcass and make a soup, roast your carrots with a little balsamic vinegar, and use the tops in your salad. Using up all of the ingredients that you buy can reduce your food waste and save both the environment and your wallet.

7. Grassfed… Everything.

When cows or goats only eat grasses and other forages, as nature intended, it translates into healthier milk from healthier cows. And it’s not just dairy; grassfed meat and even dietary supplements like whey protein are now being sourced from grassfed cattle.

8. Snack Attack

Snacking or eating small, frequent meals has become a big trend in the quest to eat healthy. Everyday, more snacks are offering low sugar, non-GMO and gluten-free options.

9. The End of Fat Phobia?

Gone are the days when we threw out the yolks and ate the whites! Americans are much more open to embracing healthy fats and fats from coconuts, olives, and avocados are appearing in a variety of products.

10. Supplements

Most Americans are open to using dietary supplements to help fill in the gaps in an imperfect diet.
