Does Medicare Cover A Dietitian? Coverage & Benefits Explained

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

  • Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services provided by a dietitian, with a referral from your doctor, for specific medical conditions.
  • Nutrition services for diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or a recent kidney transplant are covered.
  • Nourish online dietitian services are covered by Medicare.

Your nutrition needs and health conditions change as you age.

Seeking support from a registered dietitian that’s covered by insurance can help you navigate nutrition information confidently and meet your health goals.

Read on to learn what Medicare covers for nutrition services, including eligibility requirements, coverage limitations, and alternative options for seeking nutritional support.

Does Medicare Cover a Dietitian?

A registered dietitian can provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT), a nutrition-based treatment and education plan that typically includes several sessions to help improve and manage health conditions.

MNT is covered for individuals with Medicare Part B or Medicare Advantage (Part C) with the following health conditions:

A doctor must refer patients to be eligible for MNT from a registered dietitian.

What Nutrition Services are Covered by Medicare?

Once your doctor refers you to a dietitian, you have access to nutrition services (or MNT) which include the following:

Nutritional Assessment

A registered dietitian will complete an initial assessment (or session) to determine your nutrition needs, health goals, and eating behaviors.

These are typically 45 to 60 minutes long.

The dietitian will then create an individualized MNT education plan to help you improve your overall health related to diabetes or chronic kidney disease.

You and your dietitian will adjust the MNT plan at further sessions.

One-on-one Counseling

You and your dietitian will work together to manage and improve your health conditions.

You might work on changing your diet, expanding your nutrition education, and learning how to change habits.

Some examples of topics you may cover:

  • Reading nutrition and food labels.
  • Planning meals to manage diabetes or chronic kidney disease.
  • Adjusting eating routines and blood glucose monitoring.

Group Counseling

Some dietitians provide group counseling, in which two or more individuals learn about the same health condition.

Unique benefits of group counseling sessions may include:

  • Peer support (people may share experiences you can relate to).
  • A sense of community (which may help you feel more supported).

How Often Can I See a Dietitian with Medicare?

Medicare will cover three hours of individual or group counseling provided by a registered dietitian in the first year after your referral from a doctor.

In subsequent years, Medicare will cover additional MNT from a dietitian for up to two hours as long as you continue to have a diagnosis of diabetes or chronic kidney disease.

Typically, these hours are separated into shorter sessions and spaced out by several weeks to allow you to work on your health goals and share feedback as you implement the changes.

Eligibility Requirements for Medicare Coverage of Nutrition Services

There are many factors to understand regarding Medicare coverage eligibility, including age, qualifying health conditions, the various parts of medical care, and accepted health programs.

Limitations and Restrictions

Medicare is health insurance for people 65 years and older.

Some people are eligible for Medicare earlier with specific disabilities, end-stage renal disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Medicare has different “parts” that cover different kinds of medical care.

  • Part A primarily covers hospitals, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and home health care.
  • Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, home health care, medical equipment, nutrition services, and preventive services like screenings and shots.
  • Part D helps cover prescription medications.
  • Part C (or Medicare Advantage) is a Medicare-approved plan from a private company that usually covers Part A, Part B, and often Part D.

You pay nothing if you have a doctor referral for MNT to address diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or have had a kidney transplant in the last 36 months.

You are eligible if you have original Medicare (Part A and B) or Medicare Advantage (Part C).

Another program called diabetes self-management training (DSMT) is available to individuals with diabetes.

DSMT includes ten hours of combined individual and group training to improve the health and nutrition of people with diabetes.

You can use MNT and DSMT at the same time; however, you cannot get services from both programs on the same day.

A doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant can refer you for DSMT.

Alternative Options For Nutrition Support

If your Medicare insurance doesn’t cover nutrition support from a dietitian for your specific health conditions, like prediabetes or heart disease, there are other options to learn more about nutrition.

If you still have private insurance coverage under your employer, they might cover nutrition therapy.

Depending on your state and if you have Medicaid, it may cover nutrition services for conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, and gastrointestinal disorders.

Many communities offer health programs funded by grants or at discounted rates.

Check with local community centers and hospitals for programs in your area.

Lastly, you can pay for nutrition services out of pocket.

Many dietitians offer discounted services or online self-paced group courses at a lower rate.

Look for courses or services provided by a registered dietitian (RD) or registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) to ensure you receive up-to-date research-based nutrition care.
